Black Feminist Film School
ONLY 2019
Black Feminist Film School draws from Black Feminist legacies to engage filmmaking as spiritual practice. If you want to know more about who we are and what we have done up to this point visit our blog at blackfeministfilmschool.wordpress.com for more on our early work.
The major purpose of this site is to invite you who have a sense of what we are doing to experience the Black Feminist Film School approach to filmmaking through a series of two-week course and production intensives. Our course are for all levels - novice to seasoned and award winning. From introductory content to advanced content we explore the 5 primary areas of filmmaking - Development (Scriptwriting), Pre-Production, Production, Post-Production and Distribution (Screening). Anyone who completes 2 of our introductory courses will have an opportunity to attend our live events, workshops and production intensives, (mostly) in Durham, NC and in other locations. Welcome to filmmaking as Spiritual Practice!
Development
In this phase of the filmmaking process with an idea or draft for a short script and an intention to develop it into an excellent (bf*) script that can be made into a film. We share basic tools and deep dives into the bffs methodology.
Pre-Production
We use the script as a roadmap to collectively journey into storytelling. We offer an introduction AND a deep dive for those interested in engaging the Black Feminist Film School methodology for film Pre-production.
Production
In a bf Production the team uses the script and production plan to create the ceremony that is the story world and records the scenes of the film. This is prep for hands on experience on a bf set. Start here then join us on set.
NOTE: This is the 2019 page with offerings for 2019 course only. You can see the links to all course areas but they will not be active until the 2020 launch of those courses.
Post-Production
In the post-production phase of filmmaking our team transforms the footage and audio into a cohesive story. Here, through introductory and more in-depth study we share tools for (re)constructing story elements and discover the complete film.
Sound & Score
We use Sound Design and Score to represent the sonic and vibrational world of the film which must be considered from beginning to end. Though this is not one of the five main stages, it is such a complex area that we feature it prominently.
Distribution & Screening
This phase is all about sharing the film with our audiences of choice. In this course we introduce you to the standard and non-traditional paths of distribution and hosting screenings. We also consider ways to leverage your skill & experience to get/do more film work.
